We’ve known twitter for allowing its users to post updates with a maximum text, media or both for a limit of 140 characters. If a user added links, or quoted tweet from others, their @usernames added to the 140 characters thereby reducing the number of relevant text items shareable!

What’s new?

Recently, twitter has announced through Sasank Reddy on 30th March, 2017 a remake of the previous character limit. Though, 140 characters are still supported, twitter has now made it more useful through some impressive fixes.

Including; media items (photos, GIFs) and @username quotes that are not counted as part of the countable post characters. This will in turn create more room for important text items deemed relevant to the update.

Explaining this, Sansak Reddy highlighted:

It’s now easier to follow a conversation, so you can focus on what a discussion is about, and who is having it. Also, with all 140 characters for your replies, you have more room to participate in group conversations…

According to the same, this implementation allows the reply @usernames to be placed above the tweet instead of forming part of the tweet. Users can easily tap on ‘Replying to…’ to control who forms part of the tweet. What more, when users are reading replies, they’ll see the relevant conversations instead of the many @usernames that were starting those replies in earlier versions.

More features will be implemented to improve the relevance of conversations in the future, said the same source.
