Last February saw a huge update in WhatsApp which brought a new feature, media status update as in Snapchat and Facebook’s own Instagram. This new feature allowed only photos, videos and animated GIFs to be used in status updates which will be gone (automatically disappear) after 24 hours.

While the new status update feature was interesting and welcomed by most of the over 1 billion WhatsApp users, we shouldn’t disregard the fact that most of us were ‘bored’ that the text status update was off! This was because the text status was very cool when it comes to letting your friends know your current ‘status’.

We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.―Jan Koum, WhatsApp.

What we feared versus the Good News!

To be frank, a statement on the official WhatsApp blog saw Jan Koum, CEO of WhatsApp announce the new status update feature. The statement scared most of us, though some excerpts were interesting, since we thought the ‘old good text status’ was gone for good. But finally, it is here once again!

The latest Beta version for Android has it embedded back in the about section of the app, below the user’s profile picture, or display picture (dp), as some call it. This restoration of the old feature is now in test mode hence only available to Beta Testers.

To start using this feature, one must have an official  WhatsApp Beta version installed or wait for the public version to be rolled out! The Beta version may be share by a friend or simply sign up to get it instantly and forever. No commitments, no fees, no worries. A user can always leave the service.
