It seems all is set for the launch of Newspack, an open-source publishing platform for news organisations and agencies. The platform is said to be a move to help solve some of the longstanding problems facing news organisations who want to create economically sustainable versions for journalism and other forms of news publishing.
The project is a joint effort between WordPress’ parent company, Automattic Inc. and other news industry leaders who want to embark on a mission to help small, medium-sized and other large news agencies to easily create and control an effective and economically managed news content. Part of the goals of the new project is to simplify digital news publishing and to create sustainable models for journalism.
“With many local news organizations struggling to find sustainable models for journalism, we’re seeing a need for an inexpensive platform that provides the technology and support that lets news organizations build their businesses and focus on what they do best — providing critical reporting for their communities. Our hope with Newspack is to give them a platform where they can continue to focus on what they do best, while we focus on providing world-class technology and support across their editorial and business operations.” — According to a post published by Mark Armstrong on the WordPress Blog.
In another post sighted on Newspack’s official blog, small and medium-sized digital news organisations who report on local activities, single topic or general news are being invited to join as charter participants in the development of the Newspack project. The beta version of the news publishing platform is scheduled for launching around the end of July this year (2019).
